Day 03 was the first semi-”let me at ‘em” day. Days 01 and 02 were like “I don’t wanna go, but I have to get started sometime”.

I started today on the weights instead of the bag for two reasons… 1) I was getting fatigued ahead of time and wasn’t able to judge where I was with the actual weights, compared to what I used to push, and 2) Since I primarily stand “righty” when I’m striking, I was excessively fatiguing my left arm, which meant that once I got to dumbbell curls, my left failed way before my right.

You don’t want that, because you have to stop working on the stronger side when the weaker side fatigues so that you don’t maintain the right side’s superiority. Ultimately, you want both arms to ‘fail’ at the same weight and the same number of reps.

It’s also important because when you do exercises with bars, like wide-grip pulldowns, for instance (or even leg extensions or leg curls where you use both legs at the same time), if one side’s weaker, you end up compensating with the stronger arm.

This would seem to be a good thing, like the stronger arm is helping the weaker arm to push/pull more weight, as if you were being ’spotted’ by someone. What it actually does is make the stronger arm work MORE, since the weaker arm already failed and is kind of just there “fakin’ the funk”.

Fakin’ The Funk

The obvious problem with this is that one side remains weaker and overworked the entire time, leading to UNDERworking your strong side, waiting for the weak side to catch up. I decided to avoid that this time and go for the weights first.

It wasn’t so bad this time. I probably pushed 1/2 of what I’m used to. That’s good for day 03 / first week back. I walked in @ 164.4, another Guinness World Record weight for The Kid, haha. My metabolism is (according to Steve… WAS :/ ) incredibly high, to the tune of I need to consume ~5,000 calories/day in order to gain weight.

Obviously, the problem with that is that I’d have to spend A LOT of time eating and A LOT of time resting in order to maintain weight. Especially back in the day, when we used to hit Roseland or Palladium or Underground and I’d drop four (4) pounds in one evening, dancing hahaha, that was pretty much a drag. :/

Anyway… I figure the extra .2 lbs was from the water I drank while I was there. I feel good right now… Way better than I felt after days 01 and 02. Muscle Memory works in stages. The first stage is “I don’t want to do this”. The second stage is each individual group getting its wits back. The third stage is the groups starting to work together… biceps working with lats on pulldowns. triceps working with chest on dips or pressdowns, etc. The fourth stage is unity… The whole system working as one machine.

I’m currently in stage 2. The wrong muscles are failing on the exercises. My shoulders are failing on the “dip machine”, when it’s supposed to affect my triceps. My biceps are failing on the wide-grip pulldowns, when it’s supposed to be my lats. At some point, the weak links are going to come online, and I’ll progressively get a lot more out of my workouts.

Current prediction of max weight = 170. I still don’t believe my system’s going to sustain any more weight than that without sweating it all away.

I still haven’t prepped the day 01 video and haven’t even looked at the day 02 video, so I’ll repost a video from July, 2007, back in the 155 days:

Perian v 1.1.3 ‘breaks’ incoming iChat video

Posted by Bill Cammack On December - 30 - 2008

If you’re using iChat for video chatting on a mac and you also use Perian to handle video codecs, you may have noticed that suddenly, your video shows to the person you’re chatting with, but you can’t see them at all. You get the connect sound, and you can hear them, but your video screen never becomes the small box and reveals their video to you.

The solution to this problem for me was to uninstall Perian v 1.1.3 and then download and install Perian v 1.1.2.

The exact steps:
1 ) go to system preferences
2 ) select “Perian” from your “other” section at the bottom
3 ) in the “General” tab, click “Remove Perian”
4 ) Click here to download Perian v 1.1.2
4a) scroll to the bottom of the page
4b) click the link that says Download Perian Version 1.1.2 (File Size: 2.6M)
4c) here is the actual link: Download Perian Version 1.1.2

5 ) open “Perian_1.1.2.dmg”
6 ) open “Perian.prefPane”
7 ) click “ok” on the confirmation notification that pops up
8 ) give your pasword
9 ) click “Install Perian”
10) you should see “Installed Version 1.1.2″

That’s it. You’ve rolled back Perian to the previously perfectly-working-with-iChat version. You will get a message eventually, saying that there’s a new version of Perian available, v 1.1.3. Select “skip this version”.

I found out about this fix @ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8667850 and it worked for me immediately. :)

Twitter? Or Your Blog?

Posted by Bill Cammack On December - 29 - 2008

Twitter changed the game as far as blogging. Instead of posting something, and MAYBE people would stop by your blog and MAYBE they’d read your articles and MAYBE they’d leave a comment, all of a sudden, what you had to say was being pushed to people who actually REQUESTED to hear what you had to say by following you and then either checking the site itself or installing an app or widget on their computers or phones.

Michelle & Bill
Twitter > Bill

I noticed that the traffic on the Yahoo Videoblogging Group fell off DRASTICALLY as Twitter presented a far better and faster way for people to get immediate responses to questions than an email list.

I also noticed A LOT OF PEOPLE putting a lot of their ideas on Twitter instead of their own blogs. I didn’t really think much of that until I talked with Tyme White about it ten (10) months ago, back in March, 2008:

Tyme: “Yes, the conversations are moving away from blogs but the problem is the same problem that has always existed, one I warned about at least two years ago. How many times has a writer published an article, a larger site wrote about it, and the conversation took place every where but on the writer’s site? Same problem – the writer would have to keep up with those conversations. Now, the same root problem exists, but there are many more sites where the conversation can take place. The writer publishes the entry and now a discussion can happen on the originating blog, any blogs that write about it, any site that aggregates content (Reddit, Chawlk, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.), Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, any of the social sites that are popping up, forums…the list is long.”

The question is: does it matter to the writer if the conversation takes place in other places? If the answer is no, the writer would have one strategy. If the answer is yes, it does matter and the preference is for the conversation to take place on their blog, well, that would take a different strategy, wouldn’t it?”

So, referencing that practically-one-year-old post by Tyme… Does it matter where *YOU* blog your material? I blog mine to BillCammack.com. I post references to my blog posts on Twitter and Tumblr. Read the rest of this entry »

Gym, Day 02

Posted by Bill Cammack On December - 28 - 2008

In: 163.7
Out: 163.9

So, of course, I increased my food consumption now that I’m back in the gym. The same electronic scale reported that I was 163.7 when I walked in the door and 163.9 on the way out (most likely due to drinking water while I was working out). Read the rest of this entry »

Sorry… That’s Not Love

Posted by Bill Cammack On December - 28 - 2008

Purplecar called my attention last night to a post on CNN.com by Wendy Atterberry called “Why women shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ first”. There were some decent points in the post, in the typical advice column fashion:

Wendy: “But an ‘I love you’ uttered too soon, before the man has processed his feelings and reached the same level of adoration could end a relationship that just as easily could have had an eternal shelf life. As soon as those words are said, they change the dynamic. If a man isn’t feeling the love quite yet, he may suddenly feel pressure to manifest that emotion. And if the woman doesn’t get the response she expected, it could damage her confidence enough to derail the whole relationship entirely.”

I’m sure that this scenario plays itself out every single day, all around the world. I think the advice is valid for the way people approach “Love”. The problem is that lots of people have a retarded idea of what “Love” actually is.

I know this is going to be hard for you to process, because it so complex, but bear with me for a minute… you ready?… The reality of the situation is:

You Love Who You Love

That’s it. There’s nothing more that matters in that sentence. Everything else is on the fringe… window dressing. There are only two states. You love someone or you don’t. Period. There may be REASONS why you love this person, but that has nothing to do with the STATE of feeling love or being in love. Read the rest of this entry »

At Least ACT Like You Give A Damn

Posted by Bill Cammack On December - 27 - 2008

Sean Bohan’s article, “The 50/50 Rule, Link Love & Reciprocity” starts out like this:

Sean: “The 50/50 Rule is something I started sharing with clients a while back. It’s nothing new or earth-shattering and TONS of individuals and companies are doing it EVERY SINGLE DAY. The idea is simple – to connect in the Social spaces where the users live, you need to spend half as much of your time talking about the users as you do about your brand/product/service/website/effort/whatever.”

This is an intelligent idea. At least ACT like you give a damn. People aren’t being taught this. All they’re being told is that there are new and wonderful technologies available on the internet that they can utilize to make money, and here they come, a-runnin’. I currently have 1,567 followers on Twitter. I’d say I get five (5) new followers every single day. Somebody told these people to put auto-responders on their Twitter accounts.
