Rewriting History

Posted by Bill Cammack On March - 31 - 2009

City At NightI took down a post yesterday. It’s not the first time I’ve ever removed a post from my site. I can’t imagine it’ll be the last time. I’ve tried for literally HOURS to figure out some sort of coherent way to discuss this, but nothing’s coming to mind and I’m wasting time thinking about it.

Let me throw up some random points about the situation and ask you to leave a comment below if you have any thoughts to add to this conversation. I think it’s an important conversation, but there are too many elements and too many tangential discussions for me to bring them all together to some kind of point. Read the rest of this entry »

Shilling Away Your Social Capital

Posted by Bill Cammack On March - 30 - 2009

There’s a lot of talk these days about each of us having a “Personal Brand”. Some consider this to be vaporware, while others take the concept rather seriously.

A few months ago, I was asked something to the effect of “Doesn’t having a personal brand limit you?”, to which, my reply at the time was basically that your personal brand is as limiting as your personal abilities. In other words, if you can’t do very much, your personal brand isn’t going to be very valuable. Your name won’t ring any bells. People won’t associate ANYTHING with your “brand”.

For instance, there is no such thing as a “Frisbee”. Frisbee is a BRAND NAME that was made up and applied to the actual item, which is a Flying Disc. There are lots of companies that make flying discs, but we call every single flying disc in existence a Frisbee. THAT’S “Your name ringing bells”.

Same thing for “Band Aid”… No such thing. It’s an Adhesive Bandage. However, we call every single adhesive bandage in existence a Band Aid. I’ve never asked ANYONE for an adhesive bandage in my entire life.

So, think about what people associate with YOUR name… YOUR “personal brand”. Even if you haven’t tried to cultivate one, you have one. It’s merely a question of how weak or strong it is. Interestingly enough, you don’t even necessarily KNOW what your own personal brand actually is, because you might attempt to cultivate one thing, but what people take away from your internet presence is something entirely different. La Forza Del Destino

ok. This sucks. Some meetup. :/ How does it happen that there’s a meetup and you’re THE. ONLY. ONE. that shows up? At least they could have picked a bar with attractive girls. Damn. I’m practically bored to death… Good thing I like beer.

*Future-Bill laughs at me as he would have just whipped out his g1 and invited more ladies to the bar to keep him company*

It’s funny how you can tell all the patrons here are locals. They all walk in the door with that same dull, lifeless look, select a booth and begin chattering away with people about things that don’t matter at all and that they won’t remember tomorrow. They’re already resigned to the fact that nothing good’s going to happen in their lives today, so at least they can have a drink and a conversation before going to sleep… again….

ok… The chick that just walked in the door doesn’t belong here. She looks too intelligent for this crowd… Read the rest of this entry »

Sometimes, It’s Not You

Posted by Bill Cammack On March - 26 - 2009

A long time ago, I was asked to do something that I didn’t want to do, I didn’t need to do and that I knew was an incredibly bad idea. I guess I can say that there have been lots of times that people have asked me to do stuff I didn’t want to do, maybe every day, as of late…

But I’m talking about back in the day, when nobody knew or cared who I was or what I did outside of my small circle of close friends. No daily people asking for handouts or help with their businesses. No endless stack of emails to the tune of I now have over 3,000 unread email messages and over 1,000 unread Facebook messages. I’m talking about when we used to keep it TIGHT and only interact with each other and everything everyone said was the truth as far as they saw it and everything we said to each other was important. Everything Counted….. Read the rest of this entry »

Is it possible?

Posted by Bill Cammack On March - 25 - 2009

Is it possible that she could actually be this stupid? I mean, really… A grown-ass woman. :/ Two kids.. Neither of them in the single-digits… And here she is, sitting right across the table from me, FRONTIN’!

What happened to last night? Sounds like that joke, right? “That’s not what you said last night!” (actually, usually utilized as “That’s not what YOUR MOMS said last night!” in order to get on your opponent’s nerves). I mean, wait a minute… Read the rest of this entry »
