Scripting A Ghetto Crime Web Series

While researching ghetto crime web shows for an upcoming project, I noticed several stereotypes that I hope we’ll be able to avoid.

So a good friend of mine pitched me an idea for a ghetto crime web series which I’ll probably edit and also co-write with him and whomever else he selects to make this project happen.

I think he has a great idea for a fresh take on the genre, so I’m excited about and interested in the project.

House of Cards – Season 01 Ep01-EP05

Spacey knows whether or not you’re even a brick in the wall… And even if you are… Who talks to bricks? \o/

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy House of Cards AT ALL, so I’ve just gotten around to watching it.

Of course Kevin Spacey always puts in WORK, but the topic was so boring that I just couldn’t see being interested in the series.

I think the only thing I heard about it was people gasping and being all shocked about some scene with a dog.

So yesterday I started watching it and almost turned it off halfway through the first episode.

I decided to give it a chance and it probably took until near the end of the 2nd episode for me to appreciate the type of writing they’re doing. Continue reading “House of Cards – Season 01 Ep01-EP05”

Why “Jersey Shore” SUCKED This Season

I’ve been writing my critique/roundup/recap series about MTV’s television show “Jersey Shore” for quite some time now.

If you’ve been following along, you’re aware that I’ve been complaining (as has everyone else that I know that watches the show) about how it’s been getting worse and worse.

The storylines suck (yes, there are WRITERS on “reality” shows. They’re responsible for deciding which footage gets aired, creatively crafting a character, by, for instance, showing every instance they can that make him or her look like a stone-cold IDIOT and deleting all the evidence that this person is actually very smart, but just does stupid things once in a while). The content sucks. What they choose to focus on sucks. What they choose NOT to focus on sucks.

I’ve also been trying to figure out WHY Jersey Shore has been so worthless recently. Continue reading “Why “Jersey Shore” SUCKED This Season”

Content is King, *NOW* (Eye Candy is Over)

Bill Cammack“Content is King” is a lie that’s been perpetuated in web video circles for a few years now. “Eye Candy” has always been.. Queen.. but I’ve recently noticed that the tables have turned and Content actually *has* overtaken EC..

I wrote about EC in March 2008 and mentioned “the formula”, which was that whatever actual content you had, the way to get views for your show was to have an attractive female as the ‘front’ or the ‘face’ of the show. She didn’t have to know or understand JACK about JACK so long as she could look good and read her lines. I probably noticed this formula in 2007, since I got started in online video in 2006.

Regardless of the content, the most popular shows were headlined by a female that was nice to look at. Period. (with the one obvious exception being Ze Frank’s “The Show”)

It was even worse on YouTube, because everybody knew that YT took the picture that represented your video from exactly 50% into your episode. If your video was 6 minutes long, the still YT would take was @ 3 minutes. So.. Regardless of what the actual content was, people would figure out the final length of their show and insert a few frames of a chick in a bikini exactly in the middle. They’d upload their show, YouTube would pull the image of the bikini chick, all the boys would click on it expecting to see some ass, the video would get popular and then eventually ‘featured’, where it could really take off and get more views. Ladies: Flaunt Your Accomplishments!

Bill CammackNow.. I hate to pub BET (Black Entertainment Television) *AT* *ALL*, because it’s straight GARBAGE and a complete waste of immense potential as far as giving “minorities” light on a basically National televison stage… but there’s a lesson here for the ladies, so I’ll let it slide for now.

So, I’m minding my business the other day and all of these people are Twittering about the BET Awards that were going on right that minute. Stuff about how Soldier Boy (or however he misspelled it) should have been restricted to lip sync, because he can’t hit his notes, and how the censors missed cutting the audio when someone said “Dancin’ and ****”.

So, I decide to tune in to this disaster, and I see a very classy performance by Maxwell followed by some raunchy rap garbage that basically had every third word cut out by the censor, who, at that point was probably fearful of losing his/her job (and VERY rightfully so) to close out the show. Hopefully, the programming director got fired along with the censor for having NO TASTE WHATSOEVER… but that’s not the point. 😀

I had the DVR running, so, as usual, I was Fast-Forwarding all of the commercials. However, there was one commercial that they kept running and eventually, I decided to back up and watch it. It was for this upcoming BET show called “Tiny & Toya”.

Tiny & Toya

So, it’s not relevant *WHY* I decided to finally watch this commercial, hahaha 😉 but I did. So you see a couple of typical BET-looking chicks on the screen and then they start talking in sound bites…. Actually, someone uploaded the video to YouTube, so watch it for yourself: Continue reading “Ladies: Flaunt Your Accomplishments!”
