Social Media Budgeting (Cars, Not Trophies)

Social Media

Bill CammackPeople always want to know how to make money with social media.

The problem is that social media doesn’t make money FOR you. Social media ENABLES YOU to make money…. maybe.

Everybody wants to know how their sales are going to increase once they hire you to create a website or set them up with a presence on Facebook or Twitter. Continue reading “Social Media Budgeting (Cars, Not Trophies)”

How Do You Make Money With Social Media?

Ultimately.. I get paid because I can do things other people can’t do. Period.

Bill CammackSo, The other day, I go to lunch with a friend of mine who isn’t into Social Media. I start showing him my personal fansite, my business site, Facebook, Twitter / TweetDeck, blip.tv, YouTube, Tumblr, Ustream, IRC, Skype, iChat, so then he goes:

“So how do you make money with all this stuff?”

So I laughed a little, because I knew I had a long, LONG explanation ahead of me. 😀

Special Case

Before I get started with this, I need to mention that I’m a special case. PART of what I’m about to say will be useful to someone else. Most of it’s only useful to me. Continue reading “How Do You Make Money With Social Media?”

Stop Diluting Your Brand

Bill & NancyLet’s say you have something that you do well. One thing. Just one. Next thing you know, you find out about Social Media and all the good things that are now available for everyone to take part in. Before you jump in the pool, consider that you might not be able to swim. Don’t get in over your head with Social Media, because the effect is going to be *YOU* looking unprofessional, AND broadcasting that YOURSELF to the entire world.

Let’s say you’re a football player. Let’s say you have lots of IRL fans and it seems like a good idea to you to start utilizing sites/apps like Twitter, Ustream, Qik, Youtube, Livestream, BlogTV, Tinychat, Tokbox, Facebook, MySpace, etc etc to increase your numbers of “followers” and increase your international visibility. To a degree, this will work for you. If you overdo it, you won’t be able to spend the required amount of time to maintain your position in any or potentially ALL of your endeavors. If you don’t maintain your positions properly, people are going to start recognizing you for SUCKING at Social Media more than they recognize you for playing football.

Of course, this is infinitely worse if you’re supposed to be a Social Media Expert (SME). Do. Not. Get. Caught. Slippin’. in your Social Media if you want someone to pay YOU to handle THEIR SM for them. Continue reading “Stop Diluting Your Brand”

Construction

I’m making a change to a pretty ambitious theme today (Friday, July 24) that I think is gonna look GREAT once I get all the changes done to the most recent entries, but is going to look pretty bad probably for the entire morning.

Also, I think I’m going to lose threaded comments using this theme, which will make some of the conversations look strange in the comments. I’ll see what I can do about that, but anyway, I wanted to make this post so you would know what’s going on this morning. I plan to be pretty well progressed by early afternoon.

Thanks for reading! 😀

Facebook Username or Twitter Handle?

Facebook Username availability may affect the popularity of using one’s Twitter handle (like @BillCammack as identification.

I never used @BillCammack as identification because Twitter is a tool, not a home. The only reason for someone to go to my Twitter page is to click “Follow”. After that, they’ll be following me in whatever app they choose, so my Twitter handle is now worthless to me as a “home base”.

Personally, I tell people to Google Bill, because I’m me. That probably won’t work for you, so we’ll skip on past that one. 😀

If you’re branding yourself properly, your screen names will be redundant across networks. This is because when something new shows up, Twitter, Jaiku, Pownce, ustream, livestream, blogtv, whatever.. People that know who you are and what you do are going to look for you as the same name you used in the previous social site. Therefore, your lineup should look like this:

Website: http://BillCammack.com
Twitter: http://twitter.com/BillCammack
Facebook: http://facebook.com/BillCammack
Ustream: http://ustream.tv/BillCammack
etc, etc, etc…..

So, even if you couldn’t just Google me, you would be able to find out what I’m doing by using the username you already know me as on the next new popular site.

The question, then… is now that you have the opportunity to easily identify yourself as:

a) Your own website,
b) Your twitter handle, or
c) Your facebook page,

Which one will you gravitate towards to represent you in your social media interactions, and why?

Top 10 Reasons to Date a Geek

Lindz & Bill present the top 10 reasons why you should actively seek out geeks for dating, relationships or marriage:

Geeks are always played down in the John Cusack / John Hughes movies, but you’ll notice they always end up with that monumental kiss at the end of the movie, indicating that a long-lasting and loving relationship ensued.

I’ll bet you wondered why they write movies that way… Well, wonder no more!!! Here’s why geeks > EVERYBODY as far as dating! 😀

1. You can learn a lot about them by going to their website – usually www.theirname.com. They will have a site.

L: What’s a geek without a site? A fake geek. Google them and you can probably find everything you need to know about them – hell – their favorite food, color and even their blood type. Just be careful though, you can also bet that they have a secret tracking service to track your IP address, so you may want to do this from your local public library.

B: FRLZ! If you can’t go to LindseyChen.com or BillCammack.com and get all the information you need to determine whether you’d like to meet this person or not, they need to turn in their geek credentials.

Even Worse… If you can’t Google Lindsey Chen or Google Bill and find them within the top 10 entries for their name, they’re probably not authentic geeks at all! :/

2. They don’t have time to cheat on you because they’re working on their startup.
